Report on Sickle Cell Program 2019

Sickle cell awareness and blood screening events run this year by the support of Medical students of the University of British Columbia (UBC). We conducted awareness classes to schools' students, mother groups members. We interacted with the health post staffs, local political leaders and teachers. Forum theater worked as a better tool to aware of sickle cell to the local people. This program started on May 8 and end on 18th May 2019.

Planning for program (May-8):

This was first day of Sickle cell project. Creating Possibilities Nepal's staffs welcomed the UBC Sickle Cell group in UNAKO house and made a plan for the activities.

School Modules with Students (May-9):

This was second day of Sickle cell project. On that day, school modules run Sadharan Ma.Bi. Rajpur and Janajyoti Ma.Bi. Bela. 128 students were UBC sickle cell group given them information about sickle cell disease. Students also asked about sickle cell disease very curiously. Then UBC sickle cell group members and C.P. Nepal’s staffs tried to solve students’ curiosity step by step.

Orientation with parents (May-10):

On May-10 C.P. Nepal conducted interaction program with C.P. students and their parents. 147 students and their parents came in UNAKO house. UBC sickle cell group members gave information about Sickle cell disease to the students and parents. They were also actively participated on that program.

Orientation with Mother Group Members (May-11 and 12):

Orientation program has been done with two different mother groups in different two places. For checking Sickle Cell Disease information, Mother group members were asked pre and post questions. Between pre and post question, C.P. Nepal’s staff and UBC sickle cell group members gave information about Sickle cell disease to the mother group members. 87 mother group members were participated very curiously.

Screening test (May-13):

On that day in Gobardiha Health Post we conducted screening test for sickle cell. Mother group members and other person also came in health post for screening. According to Gobardiha health post 113 people did screening test from different places. Among them 11 people has positive and C.P. Nepal planning for further test in Ghorahi.

Doctor interview and hospital visit (May-14):

In previous day we did screening test in Gobardiha Health post. But this day was about to visit Rapti Bigyan Pratisthan Ghorahi where meeting with Dr. Jit Narayan Yadav. On that occasion, UBC Sickle Cell volunteer got the opportunity to talk with a doctor about situation of sickle cell patients in dang and also visited Rapti Bigyan Pratisthan Ghorahi.

Interaction with political leader and Forum Theatre (May-16):

Aiming to make concern and force to allocate budget in rural community, interaction program had been done with political leader in Rajpur. “This kind of program need to every village, so we promise we are always ready to support to C.P. Nepal.” said by Lok Raj K.C a president of Rajpur Rural Municipality while attending in interaction program. 19 participants were participated on that session. Likewise, Sickle cell forum theatre also had been done at Rajpur Rural Municipality, Gangadi in May 16.

Orientation with Hero Girls and Forum Theatre (May-17):

Orientation program has been done with Hero Girls. UBC sickle cell volunteer gave information about sickle cell diseases. That time 35 Hero Girls came from Shuvtara Boarding School. They asked about sickle cell disease very curiously. Then UBC Sickle Cell volunteer tried to solve students’ curiosity step by step. That day sickle cell forum theatre also had been done at Rajpur Rural Municipality in Gahira .

Farewell to UBC Sickle Cell Group (May 18th):

This is the emotional day for all. Farewell program in UNAKO house.

Achievement:

· Political leader committed to help this program from their side.

· Mother group members, school students and other participants also have been aware about SCD.

· 113 people did screening test.

Challenges:

· Questions were complicated for the mother group member.

· Political Parities leader could not attend program in time.

· Some students not interacting in school modules.

Learning:

· All caste community members also should be focused in screening test.

· Questions should be made in very simple way.
